Super easy iced version of Matcha Milk Tea. Pair it with brown sugar boba for a sweet drink to wake you up. It’s mega-caffeinated, with the equivalent of 4 shots of espresso, so if you’re looking for a wake me up, give this hyped up drink a try.

Caffeine content

This drink contains 256 mg caffeine per cup serving. Half comes from the matcha, half comes the espresso. You can reduce the servings of matcha or espresso to decrease your caffeine consumption, or split your drink with someone.

There’s L-theanine in matcha, which draws out the effects of the caffeine to slow down the chance of you crashing from caffeine overload, but with my experience, with this much caffeine, you’ll be taking your chances. L-theanine, which usually helps your body calm down and relax, can’t fight this surge of energy.

Pregnant and nursing women, please avoid this drink since caffeine content is so high.

What you need

  • 2 teaspoon high-quality matcha
  • ΒΌ C water room temperature
  • Β½ C milk or non-dairy alternative
  • 2 oz brewed espresso (a double shot). Use 1 cup of strong coffee cooled to room temperature instead of espresso.
  • 2 teaspoon granulated sugar sweetener (to taste). You can also try it with my sweet brown sugar syrup.
  • 6 large ice cubes

How to make it

  1. In a small bowl, add matcha and room temperature water. Whisk very briskly back and forth in a straight line in a M or W shape for about 20-30 seconds until all the clumps are gone.
  2. Add cold milk and coffee.
  3. Add sweetener to taste. Stir to mix.
  4. Add ice.

Pair it with

Brown sugar boba. I think matcha always tastes good with boba.

You can also pair this drink with a pastry, dessert, or a sweet dish.

Variations

  • Matcha Hot Coffee. Use hot water instead of ice cubes to make it hot.
  • Matcha Coffee Latte. Use steamed milk instead of ice cubes to make it a latte.
  • Matcha milk tea
  • Citrus matcha juice
